![]() ![]() It discourages casual or spur of the moment purchases and really makes potential owners consider how much parrots cost - both monetarily and timewise. Personally, I think it's a good thing that parrots are more expensive. Baby macaws in particular are insanely expensive, starting around 8k and, depending on the breed, can go up to 25k (hyacinth macaws for example). Even rescue birds will have adoption fees because the place that's fostering them needs to get money back for their time, food, and the cages used. The costs of the breeders (time, food, veterinary care, cost of the space the bird takes up, shipping costs) plus the costs of the sellers (similar costs, may be more if the baby birds aren't weaned when they get them, plus the cost for the bird to be regularly handled by staff) is already quite high, and in order to make any money and continue being in business both breeders and sellers generally charge 20-50% more than their own costs. Baby African Grey's are commonly 4-6k and baby quakers are between 800-1500 depending on color mutations. The cost of parrots has gone up significantly in the past 10 years. ![]() Membership is by application according to the bylaws. These are pretty accurate prices from my experience.
